Buying your first table tennis equipment shouldn’t feel overwhelming.
This guide explains how beginners can choose the right racket and rubber without wasting money, based on my 40+ years of experience playing table tennis.
1. Introduction
There are countless table tennis blades and rubbers on the market today.
For beginners, choosing the right combination can be extremely confusing.
Here’s the conclusion first:
If you’re buying table tennis equipment for the first time, visiting a specialized table tennis shop is often the best option.
In this article, I’ll explain why I strongly recommend this approach and how beginners can avoid buying equipment that doesn’t match their level.
2. Big-Box Sports Retailers

When buying table tennis equipment for the first time, many beginners consider visiting a large sports retailer.
These stores are convenient and easy to access.
However, if you don’t yet have basic knowledge about table tennis equipment, I generally do not recommend buying your first setup there.
Of course, this does not apply if you are shopping with an experienced player or have already received reliable advice beforehand.
Here are the main reasons why.
(1) Lack of Specialized Staff
Big-box sports stores sell equipment for many different sports.
Because of this, it can be difficult to find staff with deep knowledge of table tennis equipment.
As a beginner, choosing the right setup is not easy.
There are many factors to consider, including blade speed, rubber characteristics, and overall racket weight.
Without proper advice, beginners may end up buying equipment that doesn’t suit their level or playing style.
(2) Limited Product Selection
Unfortunately, many large sports retailers offer only a limited selection of table tennis equipment.
In most cases, they mainly stock popular entry-level products, which can make it difficult to compare different options.
Of course, some large stores may have a better selection than others.
However, specialized table tennis shops usually provide a much wider range of equipment.
(3) Rubber Assembly
Unlike recreational rackets, competitive table tennis rackets require the blade and rubbers to be purchased separately and assembled together.
Although beginners can learn how to assemble a racket through online videos or tutorials, having it done by an experienced professional is usually the safer option for a first setup.
At many large sports retailers, racket assembly is often a paid service.
Even when assembly is available, the quality of the work may vary depending on the staff member. In some cases, it may also take several days before the racket is ready.
3. Local Table Tennis Specialty Shops

The most reliable place to buy table tennis equipment is a local specialty shop (Pro Shop).
(1) Access to Experienced Staff
Specialty shops are staffed by people with extensive knowledge of table tennis equipment.
Many of them are experienced players themselves, so they can recommend beginner-friendly equipment that matches your skill level and budget.
Even choosing rubber can feel confusing because there are so many types and sponge thickness options available.
With expert advice, beginners can choose equipment much more confidently.
(2) A Wide Selection of Equipment
As you would expect from a specialty shop, they usually offer a wide variety of blades and rubbers.
If you ever visit one of these shops and feel like you’ve entered a dream world filled with table tennis equipment, that’s probably the moment you become a true table tennis enthusiast.
(3) Reliable Rubber Assembly
Many specialty shops will assemble your racket for free when you purchase both the blade and rubbers there.
(Some shops may charge a small assembly fee.)
The staff at these shops assemble rackets every day and usually have a high level of skill and experience.
Even after nearly 40 years of playing table tennis, I still sometimes struggle to cut rubbers neatly myself.
In contrast, the finishing work at specialty shops is often impressively clean and precise.
Watching experienced staff assemble a racket can also deepen your appreciation for the sport.
If you become a regular customer, you may even pick up useful assembly tips from them over time.

4. Online Shopping

Although I generally recommend visiting a specialty table tennis shop, online shopping can also be a very convenient option, especially if there are no specialty stores near you.
I personally use online retailers as well when I need equipment quickly or don’t have time to visit a shop in person.
However, because you cannot physically check the products before purchasing, choosing a reliable retailer becomes especially important.
[Important] Two Types of Beginner Sets You Should Know Before Buying Online
When searching online for beginner table tennis sets, you will find many different products.
However, not all beginner sets offer the same quality or performance.
1. Recreational Sets
- These are inexpensive recreational rackets mainly designed for casual play.
- In many cases, the rubbers cannot be replaced because they are permanently attached to the blade.
- I generally do not recommend these sets for players who want to improve their skills seriously.
2. Pro-Shop Assembled Sets ★ Recommended!
- These sets are prepared by specialty table tennis shops using proper blades and rubbers.
- The racket comes fully assembled and ready to play.
- For most beginners, this is usually the safest and most reliable option.
Checklist for Choosing a Reliable Shop
Before purchasing table tennis equipment online, check the following points carefully:
- Do they specialize in table tennis?
Shops that focus specifically on table tennis usually provide better product knowledge and more reliable support. - Is the shop information clearly displayed?
A trustworthy shop should clearly list its address, contact details, and business information. - Is their customer support responsive and helpful?
If you’re unsure about what to buy, try contacting the shop before placing an order. A reliable shop will usually respond with clear and helpful advice.
3 Tips for Using Online Shops
Use more specific search keywords:
Instead of searching only for “beginner set,” try keywords such as “pro-assembled racket” or “table tennis starter kit” to find higher-quality products.
Ask questions before purchasing:
If you’re a beginner and unsure about a product, contact the shop by email or phone before placing an order. Reliable shops will usually provide helpful advice based on your level and playing style.
[Important] A Note About Table Tennis Shoes
I personally do not recommend buying table tennis shoes online for your first pair.
Shoe sizing and fit can vary significantly between manufacturers, so trying them on in person is usually the safest option.
Unlike rackets, it is perfectly fine to buy table tennis shoes from a large sports retailer if they carry proper table tennis models.
5. Essential Gear
When starting table tennis, you’ll need a few important items in addition to your racket.
To help beginners get everything they need, I’ve put together a separate guide covering the essential equipment for starting table tennis.
I hope it helps you prepare with confidence.
6. Conclusion

Many beginners ask me for advice about choosing table tennis equipment.
In most cases, I recommend simple and reliable beginner-friendly models from trusted manufacturers.
