When you decide to start table tennis, the first question is often: “Where should I buy my gear?” However, choosing the right equipment without prior knowledge can be overwhelming.
In this article, I will guide you through how to choose your first table tennis gear without making costly mistakes, based on my 40+ years of experience in the sport.
1. Introduction
Manufacturers release a vast array of table tennis equipment. Honestly, it is very difficult for beginners to select just the essential gear from such a wide variety. In particular, the combinations of blades and rubbers are so numerous that it is nearly impossible for a beginner to judge them alone.
Let me give you the conclusion right away.
If you are buying equipment for the first time without prior knowledge, the best approach is to visit a dedicated Table Tennis Pro Shop.
I will explain exactly why I recommend this.
I hope you read this article before making any purchases, to ensure that you or your child don’t end up with equipment unsuited for a beginner.
2. Big-Box Sports Retailers

When you think about buying table tennis gear, the first place that comes to mind might be a local large sports store.
While the convenience of these stores is a major appeal, I do not recommend purchasing your equipment there if you don’t yet have fundamental knowledge about table tennis.
(*Of course, this does not apply if you are accompanied by someone knowledgeable about the equipment or if you have received proper advice beforehand.)
Here are the main reasons why.
(1) Lack of Specialized Staff
Big-box sports stores carry a wide range of sporting goods, requiring their staff to have broad knowledge across many categories. Consequently, it is rare to find staff who can provide precise advice on equipment selection for a highly specialized sport like table tennis.
There is an immense variety of table tennis equipment available. Without specialized knowledge, it is an extremely difficult task for a beginner to select the optimal gear while considering factors like blade characteristics, rubber bounce, and overall weight.
(2) Limited Product Selection
Unfortunately, very few large sports stores offer a comprehensive lineup of table tennis equipment. In most cases, they only stock the bare minimum of best-selling items, which severely limits your options.
I apologize if there happen to be rare exceptions of large stores that carry a surprisingly extensive selection of equipment.
(3) Concerns Regarding Rubber Assembly
Unlike recreational rackets, professional-grade rackets require you to purchase the blade and rubbers separately and assemble them yourself.
While it is not impossible for a beginner to learn how to do this through online tutorials, it is much safer to have a professional handle the assembly the first time.
However, at many large sports stores, rubber assembly is often a paid service. Even if they offer it for free, there are frequently concerns regarding the staff’s technical proficiency. Additionally, depending on the store, it can sometimes take a significant amount of time to have it finished.
3. Local Table Tennis Specialty Shops

The most reliable place to shop for equipment is a local table tennis specialty shop (Pro Shop).
(1) Access to Expert Staff
Specialty shops are staffed by professionals with deep knowledge of the equipment.
Since many of them are experienced table tennis players themselves, they can provide precise recommendations for beginner-friendly, high-quality, and reasonably priced gear.
Even choosing a single rubber can be overwhelming due to the many varieties and thicknesses available, but with their expert advice, you can make your selection with confidence and peace of mind.
(2) An Overwhelming Selection
Naturally, as a specialty shop, the lineup of blades and rubbers is incredibly extensive.
If you start visiting these shops and find yourself feeling like you’re in a “dream land” while browsing the equipment, it’s a sure sign that you’ve officially joined the ranks of true table tennis enthusiasts.
(3) Reliable Rubber Assembly
Most shops will assemble the rubbers for you free of charge if you purchase them together with a blade, or even if you bring in your own blade (note that some shops may charge a small fee).
The staff at these shops are true professionals at rubber assembly. Even with my nearly 40 years of experience in the sport, I sometimes struggle to cut the rubbers cleanly, ending up with jagged edges. Their craftsmanship, however, is always impeccable.
Their skill, honed through countless repetitions, is nothing short of artistry. Becoming a regular customer and asking them for tips on how to assemble the rubbers yourself is a great way to deepen your appreciation for the sport.

4. Online Shopping

While I have mentioned that a table tennis specialty shop is the best option, if there isn’t one near you, using an online shop is a smart choice. Personally, I also use online shops when I’m in a hurry or don’t have a specialty shop nearby.
However, since you cannot see or touch the products in online shops, choosing a reliable retailer is extremely important.
[Important] Two Types of Sets You Should Know Before Buying Online
When searching for “table tennis beginner sets” online, you will find many products, but please be aware that they are actually completely different things depending on their quality.
- Recreational Sets
- These are toy-level rackets. They often use adhesive that cannot be removed once applied, so you cannot replace the rubbers later. I do not recommend these for beginners.
- Pro-Shop Assembled Sets ★Recommended!
- These are products where a table tennis specialty shop combines a high-performance blade and rubbers, selling them in a “ready-to-play” condition. This is the optimal solution for beginners.
Checklist for Identifying a Good Shop
To ensure you don’t make a mistake, please check the following points before purchasing:
- Are they specialized in table tennis? A “Pro Shop” specialized in table tennis is likely to offer more professional support than a store that handles a wide range of sports.
- Is their operational information clearly stated? Clearly listed addresses and contact information are proof of reliability.
- Is their customer service helpful? If you are hesitant before buying, try sending an inquiry via email. A shop that returns precise, expert advice is one where you can feel secure about their after-sales support.
3 Tips for Using Online Shops
Be creative with search keywords: Instead of just searching for “beginner set,” use terms like “Pro-assembled” or “Table Tennis Starter Kit” to search with quality in mind.
Ask about anything you’re unsure of: If you are a beginner, try consulting them via email or phone about whether the product suits you before purchasing. A shop capable of providing professional answers is trustworthy.
[Caution regarding shoes!] I don’t really recommend buying table tennis shoes online. Since the shape of the foot and sizing vary greatly by manufacturer, it is most certain to choose them by actually trying them on. If they are dedicated table tennis shoes, it is perfectly fine to purchase them at a large sports store.
5. Essential Gear
When starting table tennis, there are a few other items you should prepare in addition to your racket.
To help beginners assemble everything they need without any confusion, I have summarized my personal recommendations for a complete beginner’s kit in a separate article. Please use it as a guide for your preparations.
6. Conclusion

I often receive requests from beginners asking for advice on choosing equipment. In such cases, I usually recommend entry-level models released by various manufacturers. For equipment that I can confidently recommend as a “sure bet,” please check out the detailed article below:
Actually, the other day, I spotted a parent and child searching for table tennis gear at a large sports store. Seeing them struggle to pick out equipment without clear guidance made me want to step in and help. However, I hesitated to intrude as a stranger acting like a “know-it-all,” so I held back.
That feeling of frustration is exactly what inspired me to write this article.
If you are lucky enough to have a “Table Tennis Specialty Shop” nearby, I strongly encourage you to pay them a visit. Consulting with professional staff to find the gear that is right for you is the surest first step toward a long and enjoyable journey in this sport.
I sincerely hope you find the perfect equipment to jumpstart a fulfilling table tennis life. Thank you for reading until the end.
