1. Introduction

I am such a big fan of tacky rubbers that I use them on both sides of my Chinese penhold racket.

In my 20s, I mainly used fast and bouncy equipment such as speed-glued classic rubbers and tensor rubbers. Back then, my style was all about overwhelming opponents with speed.

However, as I got older, I started thinking more seriously about the kind of table tennis I wanted to play. About 20 years ago, I gradually began experimenting with tacky rubbers.

Today, I use only tacky-style rubbers on my main racket.

2. Why Did I Start Using Tacky Rubbers?

(1) Pushes and Short Stops Become More Stable

Tacky rubbers provide excellent control for pushes and short stops.

Unlike tensor rubbers, they are not overly bouncy. This makes it easier to keep short balls low and controlled. Even when I add stronger impact to my pushes, I still feel confident that the ball will land safely on the table.

(2) More Stable Drives Close to the Table

With tensor rubbers, I found it very easy to loop from mid-distance or far from the table. However, when I took a full swing close to the table, I often felt that the ball would fly long before creating enough arc.

Tacky rubbers, on the other hand, do not catapult the ball too much. This allows me to swing harder near the table while still generating heavy spin and a controlled arc. I feel much more confident that the ball will land where I imagine.

(3) You Can Produce Tricky Balls That Opponents Dislike

Simply put, tacky rubbers help produce balls that many opponents find uncomfortable to play against.

Of course, this may vary depending on the opponent. However, balls produced with tacky rubbers often have different speed, spin, and trajectory compared to tensor rubbers. Because of this, they can disrupt the opponent’s timing and rhythm.

The spin is often heavier than it appears, which can cause opponents to misread the ball. As a result, they may block the ball long or make simple attacking errors.

[Key Point] Older players should prioritize stability when choosing equipment!

3. Why Are Tacky Rubbers Recommended for Older Players?

Compared to tensor rubbers, tacky rubbers generally produce slightly slower shots and calmer rallies.

(1) Slower Ball Speed Creates More Time

When using tacky rubbers, rallies tend to slow down because the ball speed is slightly lower.

At first, this may sound like a disadvantage. However, in real matches, there are not many situations where you can finish the point immediately with one powerful shot.

I believe it is very important for older players to have enough time to recover after each shot and prepare calmly for the next ball.

[Key Point] Slower rallies give you more time and better control over your game!

(2) The Spin Is Heavier Than It Looks

The biggest strength of tacky rubbers is spin.

Even with the same swing, I feel that tacky rubbers can generate much heavier spin than tensor rubbers.

What matters most is that the spin is often stronger than opponents expect just by looking at the ball. Because of this, opponents may misread the amount of spin and make more mistakes.

[Key Point] Even without hitting winners, you can force opponents into net or long errors!

(3) You Can Produce Unique Ball Characteristics

As mentioned above, even with the same swing, balls hit with tacky rubbers behave differently from those hit with tensor or classic rubbers. The speed, spin, and trajectory are all slightly different, creating a very unique ball quality.

If your opponent is not familiar with tacky rubbers, you can use these unique characteristics to control the rhythm of the match and play at your own pace instead of relying only on speed.

[Key Point] Aim for smart, controlled table tennis that earns points naturally!

4. Recommended Tacky Rubber: Apollo 5 (YINHE)

The rubber I highly recommend is Apollo 5 by YINHE. It was the rubber that truly inspired me to transition seriously into using tacky rubbers.

Apollo 5 has also remained popular for many years among players who enjoy Chinese-style rubbers.

Apollo 5 has all the characteristics I personally look for in a tacky rubber, and I used it on the forehand side of my main racket for many years.

Today, I also use hybrid tacky rubbers such as Butterfly Dignics 09C. However, the spin and close-to-the-table control I experienced with Apollo 5 still strongly influence my equipment choices today.

(1) Confident Serves Even With Strong Impact

Apollo 5 is a tacky rubber that is especially focused on generating spin. The spin is much heavier than it looks, and even with strong impact, the ball does not fly too long. Personally, I find it extremely easy to control.

In particular, backspin serves became much sharper and lower, producing the kind of “skimming” trajectory that I always wanted.

(2) Even Pushes Can Become Weapons

Compared to many other tacky rubbers, Apollo 5 generates extremely heavy spin. Its pushes are so spinny that they can force opponents into net errors.

(3) Stable Loop Attacks

I have written mostly about the advantages, but honestly, this rubber is surprisingly not very bouncy.

I once compared it with a friend’s Dignics rubber from Butterfly by bouncing the ball on the racket. Apollo 5 felt almost half as bouncy.

However, this is exactly why I can swing hard close to the table while still keeping heavy-spin loops safely on the opponent’s side.

When looping from mid-distance or far from the table with Apollo 5, brushing alone does not produce enough power. You need to impact the ball more strongly and more solidly, almost as if crushing the ball.

It takes some adjustment, but once you get used to it, Apollo 5 can produce powerful loops even from mid-distance.

Unfortunately, Apollo 5 is not widely available on Amazon US. If you are looking for a more accessible Chinese-style tacky rubber, DHS Hurricane 3 is probably the best-known option internationally.

Hurricane 3 is famous for its heavy spin, lower bounce, and excellent control close to the table. Many top Chinese players have used this style of rubber for many years.

5. Conclusion

Looking back, when I used tensor rubbers, I could certainly hit faster shots. However, the return balls also became faster, and rallies often felt too quick for me to control comfortably.

I think I was constantly playing in a rushed and pressured state without enough time to stay calm during rallies.

For me, switching to tacky rubbers improved the quality of my serves and short game while allowing me to play matches at my own pace with greater stability.

In particular, Apollo 5 (YINHE) was a very memorable rubber that inspired me to seriously transition into tacky rubbers.

Today, I also use hybrid tacky rubbers such as Butterfly Dignics 09C. In the future, I would also like to try more Chinese-style tacky rubbers, including the DHS Hurricane 8-80 series.

Every tacky rubber has different characteristics, so I encourage you to find one that best matches your own playing style.

I hope this article was helpful.
