1.Introduction
Table tennis is often called a “lifelong sport” because it can be enjoyed at any age as long as you have the passion to play.
If you’re planning to take table tennis seriously as a sport, I highly recommend investing in equipment with at least the basic functional standards, rather than settling for simple play toys.
Specifically, I do not recommend pre-assembled rackets (those that come with the rubber already glued on). Please think of those as leisure tools; they aren’t designed to let you truly experience the authentic spin and speed that makes table tennis so captivating.
In this article, as a player with about 40 years of experience, I have carefully selected and will introduce 4 types of rackets and 4 types of rubbers that I can confidently recommend to beginners.
Note: Although this is titled the “2026 Edition,” it does not include new products released in 2026. Instead, I have hand-picked these items from popular, long-selling products currently on the market that have proven their quality over time.
2.Why I Don’t Recommend Pre-assembled Rackets

(1)The rubber is permanently glued to the blade.
This is because rubbers are consumables and need to be replaced periodically. On these leisure rackets, the rubber is glued too firmly to be peeled off, making replacement impossible.
(2)The performance of the racket and rubber is insufficient.
Pre-assembled rackets are strictly for recreational use. To keep the cost low, the wood and rubber used are incomparable in quality to the equipment I am about to introduce.
In competitive table tennis, the blade and the rubber are selected and bought as separate components.
While a racket (blade) can last for many years if you take good care of it, the rubber is a consumable item. Once the rubber starts to deteriorate, it must be peeled off and replaced.
※Note: Occasionally, table tennis specialty stores will sell beginner sets where they have pre-attached separate rubbers to a blade. These sets are perfectly fine to purchase and are of high quality.
Furthermore, each table tennis manufacturer offers equipment specifically for beginners that is affordable, easy to handle, and has a balanced performance without any quirks.
3.Key Points for Choosing Your Racket and Rubber
When choosing a racket and rubber, simply picking the most expensive product is not always the best move.
For your first setup, let’s select your equipment based on the following three criteria.
(1)Rackets and rubbers that aren’t too bouncy.
For beginners, it is crucial to develop the sensation of controlling and hitting the ball with your own power. If you use equipment that is too bouncy, it becomes difficult to cultivate this feeling, which can lead to a longer and harder path to improvement.
(2)Rackets that are not too heavy.
Rackets that are too heavy have poor maneuverability, so I do not recommend them for beginners. Also, if you lack sufficient muscle strength and force yourself to use a heavy racket, you may end up injuring your shoulders or wrists.
(3)Softer Rubbers
Softer rubbers allow the ball to sink deeper into the sponge at the moment of impact. This provides better control and makes it easier to generate spin, which is why I highly recommend them.
4.Important Notes to Keep in Mind
Here are some important notes regarding your racket and rubber.
(1)Rules Regarding Rubber Colors
According to the rules, if you apply rubber to both sides of the racket, you must use different colors.
At present, Red and Black remain the dominant colors for rubbers.
※By the way, VICTAS produces a light blue rubber, such as their “Double Extra” series.
(2)Important Notes on Attaching Rubbers
The bottom part of the rubber, which features the “Rubber Name” and the “ITTF Official Mark (ITTF ●●●-△△△),” must be placed closest to the grip.
However, it is permissible to leave a small gap to avoid the area where your fingers touch the blade.
※As shown in the image below, it is common for penhold players to attach the rubber with a gap at the base to prevent it from interfering with their fingers.

I have written a detailed post about table tennis glue and how to apply it, so please check it out if you’re interested!

5.Recommended Rubber Thickness for Beginners
When purchasing a rubber, you will need to select its thickness.
Commonly, these are labeled as “Extra Thick (MAX),” “Thick,” “Medium,” “Thin,” or “Extra Thin,” though the exact terminology may vary slightly by manufacturer.
Note: Depending on the product, only “Extra Thick” and “Thick” options may be available.
In general, rubber thickness affects performance as follows:
- Thicker sponge = Higher speed / Lower control
- Thinner sponge = Lower speed / Higher control
While both “Thick” and “Medium” are good starting points, my personal recommendation is “Thick.”
If you choose “Medium,” the lack of speed may cause you to outgrow it too soon as your skills progress.
6.Top 4 Popular Rackets for Beginners
(1)Mizutani Jun Major – Butterfly
This is Butterfly’s top recommendation for beginners.
Supervised by Olympic Gold Medalist Jun Mizutani, this blade offers a level of design and performance that far exceeds its price point—delivering premium quality at an unbeatable value.
This blade doesn’t use any special composite materials that can make the feel too stiff or control difficult. It’s incredibly easy to handle, has no hidden quirks, and delivers high-level performance across the board.

(2)SWAT – VICTAS
This is a highly popular 7-ply wood blade from VICTAS. While it offers more power than a typical 5-ply blade, its thin 6.0mm profile keeps the speed manageable, providing a unique combination of softness and ease of use.
It is widely renowned for delivering high-end performance at an incredible price point.

(3)Latika – Nittaku
This is a standard 5-ply wood blade from Nittaku. With a thin 5.8mm profile and a slightly larger blade size (158mm x 152mm), it is specifically designed to provide exceptional stability for both blocking and attacking.
This blade is an ideal choice for players looking to master their fundamental techniques.

(4)Korbel – Butterfly
Finally, I’d like to introduce a 5-ply wood blade from Butterfly. This isn’t just a beginner’s blade; it is widely loved by players of all skill levels and is an excellent choice for your very first custom racket.
Although it is only available in a shakehand grip, my personal take on this blade is: “How can a product with such a perfect balance of offense and defense be sold at this price?” It offers such incredible value for the money that I can recommend it with absolute confidence.

7.Top 4 Popular Rubber Picks for Beginners
Since rubbers are consumables, I don’t recommend expensive high-end models for beginners.
Every year, numerous new rubbers are released, but many of them are discontinued just as quickly. Amidst this constant change, I would like to introduce a selection of high-performance yet affordable products—tried and true classics that have remained popular for many years.
(1)Rozena – Butterfly
Butterfly offers high-end rubbers that are priced for top-tier players, but Rozena delivers performance that can easily compete with those premium models.
In fact, Butterfly officially recommends pairing Rozena with the “Mizutani Jun Major” blade, which I introduced earlier.
I personally use Rozena on one of my own rackets as well. It’s a very well-balanced rubber with no “quirky habits,” making it a reliable choice that even beginners can use with complete confidence.

(2)Mark V – Yasaka
This is the flagship rubber of Yasaka. Having been a top-seller for about 50 years, it is often called a “Monster Rubber” in the industry.
It has been loved across generations because of its affordable price and consistent quality that players can always rely on. With no quirky habits and excellent ease of use, it is perfectly suited for beginners. Furthermore, one of its greatest appeals is the remarkably low variation in performance between individual products—you always know exactly what you’re getting.
(3)Vega Europe – XIOM
First released by XIOM in 2009, Vega Europe remains a massive hit and continues to be a top-seller today.
While the Vega series includes other specialized models—such as Vega Asia (built for speed) and Vega Pro (built for spin)—Vega Europe is specifically designed with a focus on control. Despite its high-end performance, it is remarkably affordable and easy to handle, making it a highly recommended choice for players of all levels.
(4)GTT 45 – andro
The last one is a German-made rubber that I’ve introduced many times on this blog.
This rubber features “Lite Tension” technology. While it is tensioned to provide extra bounce, it has been carefully adjusted to offer a moderate and manageable speed for beginners.
Believe it or not, this rubber is available at some shops for a surprisingly low price. It offers incredible value for such a user-friendly and reliable product.
※Caution: Please be careful, as some shops shamelessly sell this rubber at prices far exceeding the suggested retail price!
Another benefit is that this rubber comes in only one sponge thickness (1.6mm), so you don’t have to worry about choosing the right thickness. Personally, I also highly recommend GTT 45 as the ideal entry-level rubber for mastering the Penholder Reverse Backhand (RBP) technique.

8.Final Thoughts
The rackets and rubbers I’ve introduced here are relatively affordable, high-performing, and well-balanced. They are the perfect gear for practicing the fundamentals.
As you continue to practice and improve with these tools, you’ll eventually find yourself evaluating your equipment, thinking, “I need more bounce,” or “I want more spin.” When you reach that stage, table tennis becomes even more exciting.
I believe table tennis is a sport with incredible depth. I would be thrilled if this article helps those who have just started their journey. I hope you find this information useful!
I’ll be releasing English versions of my blog posts little by little. Stay tuned!
